
UCA is accepting applications for a Board of Directors’ role
Uwharrie Charter Academy is accepting applications for a role with the Board of Directors’ to serve on the Finance Committee.

As sound financial oversight is critically important to our organization, we are seeking individuals who display a commitment to the organization and its principles, mission and goals, and the distinctions between governance and management.
Ideal candidates understand financial controls and oversight, have experience creating/monitoring budgets for an organization, have experience with analyzing financial statements, have managed complex projects, and can speak the language of organizational finances. Experience with governmental and nonprofit accounting would be a plus.
Interested candidates should have career experience that will contribute to our Finance Committee’s ability to meet the following responsibilities and tasks.
Fiscal Management
- Participate in the analysis of external and internal environmental factors that determine present financial health and future fiscal strategies for UCA.
- Work closely with the UCA Administration during the budgeting process to ensure that an efficient process is followed, key elements of the strategic plan are addressed, and UCA Board of Directors’ decisions are properly interpreted in the budget.
- Review and approve the budget before it is presented to the full Board of Directors for approval.
- Monitor budget performance throughout the year and submit/require budget revisions, as necessary
- Monitor availability of funds based on Treasurer’s Report, Bank Statements, and planned budget activities to ensure adequate funding and adherence to any bond/banking covenant requirements.
- Manage funds to ensure optimized interest earnings and adequate liquidity.
Monitor Financial Operations
- Assess the reliability of the information being produced by the UCA financial staff for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Ensure the timely submission of financial reports required for Finance Committee and Board decisioning
- Recommend additional reporting, when necessary, for decisions required for special projects or items outside of normal funding and expenses
- Require annual presentation from External Auditor discussing the annual audit process and results
- Ensure appropriate controls, procedures, and polices are in place within the financial operations of UCA including, but not limited to, procurement, fund management, cash controls, disclosures of vendors/relationships, etc.
Ensure Compliance with State, Federal, and Audit Regulations/Requirements
- Identify all legal (federal, state, local) reporting requirements.
- Require timely submission of documentation required for the annual external audit and any auditor/consultant engagements authorized by the Board of Directors.
- Work with UCA Superintendent and/or Auditor to confirm timely and accurate submission of all legal reports.
- Require on-time submission of any federal/state filings (990N, etc.)
Promote UCA Fiscal Policies
- Develop fiscal policies to serve as guidelines and protection for the Board of Directors and UCA staff in addressing both complicated and routine questions relating to UCA’s financial management.
- Draft policies for Board of Directors’ approval regarding acceptable reserves, the Board of Directors’ involvement in signing major purchases or financial commitments, or appropriate use of board-designated funds.
Advance the Board of Directors’ understanding of UCA’s Financial Health
- Recommend financial education training, no less than annually, for all Board members to ensure all members can be effective stewards of UCA’s financial resources.
- Communicate to the Board of Directors financial data, highlighting implications of financial reports and clarifying how financial reports align with UCA goals and fiscal strategies.
Sustain the Finance Committee
- Annually evaluate the objectives, accomplishments, and challenges of the committee
- Establish annual goals to ensure the advancement of UCA’s financial health
- Based on assessment of UCA’s financial objectives and the composition of the committee, recruit qualified members to join the UCA Finance Committee.
