Uwharrie Charter Academy Names Dr. Chris Wheat as Next Superintendent

Asheboro, NC – April 17, 2026  The Board of Directors of Uwharrie Charter Academy (UCA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Chris Wheat as the school’s next Superintendent. A dedicated and longstanding leader within the UCA community, Dr. Wheat brings decades of educational experience and a deep commitment to the mission and students of UCA.

Dr. Wheat has served Uwharrie Charter Academy with distinction since 2018, first as High School Principal and most recently as Deputy Superintendent. His tenure at UCA has been marked by transformational leadership, innovative programming, and a steadfast focus on student success. His appointment reflects both his proven track record and his deep-rooted connection to the school community.

“Dr. Wheat’s leadership has helped shape UCA into what it is today,” said Rebecca Mead, Chair of the UCA Board of Directors. “His dedication and passion for this school, combined with his vision for the future, make him uniquely qualified to lead Uwharrie Charter Academy into its next chapter. ”

As Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Wheat has overseen districtwide operations, school culture, and strategic initiatives. His leadership has also strengthened community partnerships and enhanced opportunities for students across all grade levels.

Prior to joining UCA, Dr. Wheat served in Guilford County Schools as an assistant principal, school counselor, and teacher for more than 20 years, building a strong foundation in K-12 education, student support, and instructional leadership.

Dr. Wheat holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Liberty University, along with advanced credentials in education administration and counseling. He is also a licensed professional counselor, bringing a unique and holistic perspective to his leadership.

“When I came to UCA in 2018, I immediately connected with our student-centered learning and freedom to lead instruction that capitalizes on teacher and student creativity.”  said Dr. Wheat. “I am honored to step into the role of superintendent at UCA, where I have loved serving for the past eight years. I have been blessed to serve alongside Dr. Castelli and witness her exemplary leadership, and I look forward to continuing to serve our students, staff, and families.”

Outgoing Superintendent Dr. Sharon Castelli who will be retiring at the end of June remarked, “Serving as Superintendent of Uwharrie Charter Academy for the past six years has been one of the greatest blessings of my career. I have been especially fortunate to work alongside Dr. Chris Wheat and know that he is an Eagle through and through. While I am deeply grateful for the time, relationships, and growth we’ve shared, I am equally excited for him as he steps into this role as Superintendent. His vision, leadership, and commitment to our students, staff, and community will continue to move UCA forward in meaningful and inspiring ways.”

Dr. Wheat will officially assume his new role on July 1, 2026.
